Circumstance - lyric

Ok, one more and I may move on from lyrics. This is another one from high school. Oddly, this is probably more apt to my life now than when it was written ... a fictional event with my father ...

Circumstance

Sitting on an old folding chair
thoughts feeding a lulling fire
when a man I'd seen before
appeared with a grin I'd returned before
Years had tarnished his look
like the binding of a read, re-read book
Strange how the ease was so encompassing

Looks from his watch to the falling moon
Pauses mid-sentence, in his eyes it shown
Too much to say ... too much
Before he'd be lifted away ... couldn't say

Promised a day we'd speak again
Says of how time and memory are wed
"Did you know the wind's a drifting woman
Caressing all beneath her gentle hum?"
... we share one last smile
Strange how we sat silent as he drifted off

Looks through his watch then leans slowly back
Lifted beyond this sky by some soft impact
Too much wasn't said ... too much
That was left unsaid ... too much
